In 1974 the Cadillac Ranch was created by Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels, who were a part of the Ant Farm Collective. [1]  It is located off Interstate 40 West of Amarillo, Texas between Exits 60 [Arnot Road] and 62 [Hope and Holiday Roads]

Tagging, Graffiti & Art ?

This is not a simple issue.

The auction of Banksy’s [1] wall proves that there is an Graffiti Esthetic that has commercial value. Banksy’s esthetic is really quite special, humorous and pointedly political.  It shows that Graffiti can give value to property…

but there is a hugh HOWEVER…

The majority of the “graffiti” is tagging and has little or no value. It is expensive to remove…and anyone with a 2 dollar can of spray paint can cause hundreds of dollars if not thousands of damage to property. Making it difficult for owners to restore their property to its original condition.

Perhaps there should be public places where this activity could be allowed.. The levees along the Los Angeles River are an example of a “canvas” that would be suitable and there could be other areas…
