The note says: When there is no contrast the “form” is flat and no design - there is nothing.

When there is “total” contrast the “form” is flat and there is a design there is a composition

(”total” contrast being only black and white and no grays)

Done after seeing a Henry Moore exhibition of small sculptures and drawings & some of the imagery is based on the news images from Viet Nam.

Tears for Tina

No Christmas for Tina, 1989 © 2006 Ed Zerne

It was a cold wet snowing day as I drove to the cemetary overlooking the Schukyl River outside Philadelphia. Tina had died of her addiction and was to be interred. It had been quite some time since I had seen her.

At the service were her mother, two music teachers and three friends & classmates. She had been one of the most talented musicians that I have known. As a teenager she had played the violin in a major Symphony. She played the piano, the clarinet and other instruments.

I arrived early and sat in my car sketching the above scene. Just before the hearse arrived a flock of geese flew in the direction the hearse would come from. I walked up the hill to the tent that awaited Tina’s coffin. She was buried beside her brother and her father.

I returned to my car after the service and sat there drawing, meditating… shortly another flock of geese flew in the opposite direction as if to carry Tina away.
